IGNOU To Start Science And Technology Channel

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced to introduce its own TV channel exclusively devoted to science and technology from December 23 onwards. While interacting with the media IGNOU vice-chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai informed that the new channel will go for test transmission on December 23 from 8-10 pm. During the initial period the channel will telecast programmes in English and Hindi, he added.

In a statement to media, the IGNOU said that the science programmes would be available on Gyan Darshan-2 which is placed on the DTH (Direct To Home) platform of DD Direct Plus. While explaining the reason behind launching a TV channel solely devoted to science and technology, IGNOU said that the plan is taken up to cater to the needs of the various educational organisations, scientific organisations and distant learners.

Informing about the contents of the programmes, the IGNOU said that the channel will telecast educative and entertaining programmes which will enable the people to understand issues of their concerns and address these through a participatory process. The programmes will cater to everyone irrespective of age which will enable the people to realise the need and importance of various aspects of science. Various scientific fields will be covered by the IGNOU channel which includes application of sciences, scientific research, the history, philosophy, advancement in science, India's heritage and social aspects of sciences.
