Information accompanying a recent article on screening for cancer reported the American Cancer Society does not recommend early screening for lung cancer because there is no reliable early test.
The Lung Cancer Alliance supports computerized tomography for the detection of lung cancer at its earliest most treatable stage for those at high risk. Those at high risk include people with a family history of lung cancer; a significant smoking history; exposure to toxic agents while in the military; a significant exposure to radon, asbestos, beryllium, uranium, secondhand smoke and other known carcinogens; and previous lung disease.
Early detection is critical in lung cancer, which is the biggest cancer killer. By the time symptoms appear, it is usually too late.
A forum, "Facing Lung Cancer Together," will be held 6-8 p.m. Nov. 5 at Gilda's Club, Wade Road Extension, Latham. All are welcome.
