Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education has set up a nine-member advisory committee on educational rehabilitation with the Provost, Akwa Ibom State college of Education, Afaha Nsit, Prof Inyang Abia as chairman. The committee has Mrs Alice I. Esin, director secondary and higher education, Ministry of Education as secretary, while the Acting Vice Chancellor, Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Sunday Peters, and the Rector, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Otuekong Sylvester Akpan, are to serve as members. Other members are the Provost, college of Arts and science, Nung Ukim, Elder Bassey Udo, and the sole administrator, College of Agriculture, Obio Akpa, Dr M. U. Uko, chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Augustine Akpaetor, President of ANCOPSS, Mr Efiong Eduese, as well as the Chairman, Conference of Primary School Heads and Chairman, NAPTAN, Etubom Jerry Emah.
Inaugurating the committee during a meeting of heads of tertiary institutions in the state, the commissioner for Education, Dr Nseabasi Akpan, said the committee, which has two weeks to submit its report, was mandated to comprehensively x-ray and document problems confronting the education sector in the state from primary to tertiary levels. Dr Akpan also mandated the committee to study and draw inputs from the recommendations of the last education summit held in the state, among others. The commissioner said his tenure would witness drastic changes in the educational appraisal, rehabilitation and delivery to redress the dwindling fortunes occasioned by the enormous decay in infrastructures in the system.
The commissioner tasked stakeholders and managers of education to redouble the pace in their assigned duties for the educational goals to be achieved. He announced the constitution of a task force headed by the Acting Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Samuel Peters, to oversee the speedy completion of jobs at the site of the State University at Ikot Akpaden, for its immediate take off.
Speaking, the permanent secretary, Ministry of education, Mrs Mfon Ebienang, commended the commissioner for setting up machinery to tackle the problems militating against education in the state. Mrs Ebienang also congratulated members of the committee, whom she described as men of proven integrity in matters of education, and hoped that they would tackle their assignment with despatch. Responding, the chairman of the committee, Professor Inyang Abia, assured that the committee would live up to the expectations of government and people by proffering lasting solution to the dwindling fortunes of education in the state.
