The sudden surge in parent's preference for sending their wards to schools abroad has been blamed on astronomical drop in the Nigeria 's educational value, which has also given rise to a number of unregistered private primary and secondary schools.

Today, Nigerian youth are found schooling everywhere in the world, from the Middle East to smaller countries in Africa like Benin Republic and Togo .
Proprietor of Doregos Academy , Mrs. Clementina Doregos who blamed the trend on fallen value of Nigeria 's educational system recently in Lagos , also warned that unless the government takes stern measures to address education in the country, the influence of foreign education may completely erase the once cherished value associated with the country's educational system. She cited the on-going teachers' strike as a bad precedence.
"We have not appreciated the place of teachers in our society. They mould the future and sustain the nationalistic value of every nation. Look around every street since the strike began, our children are moving about like a herd without shepherd. An idle hand is devil's workshop, if it continues the way it is now, I am afraid the worst may befall this country in the near future.

"People talk of parents sending their children to school abroad, this is what you get when you refuse to assess how healthy your educational system is from time to time. It did not start today. Gradually, the value degenerates and no one seems to care about it. I appeal to whoever is in charge of the situation to see it as a duty to return the teachers to school", she said

While lamenting the enormous figures of students seeking admission into Nigerian universities each year, she also stressed the need for government insistence on quality for private institutions.

"We know this is a large country with so many children seeking admission. We do not have enough schools to accommodate them. However, the federal government should not bend the rules in insisting that quality should be the benchmark for establishment of private institutions in this country. You will notice that some schools lay emphasis on profit more than what to offer the children."
