National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday threatened to embark on a nationwide protest if the Federal Government refuses to immediately respond to the National Union of Teachers (NUT) demands.
NANS condemned the nonchalant attitude of the government to take proactive measure towards addressing the problems being faced by the teachers.

It maintained that, if the current strike continues, it would further exacerbate the already decayed state of education in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by NANS President, Comrade Bashir Baballe, the student body said "We are quite surprised about the attitude of various tiers of government toward ensuring the proper funding of the educational sector which is the bedrock of development of any society."

"The ongoing strike have further gone to complement the long time agitations of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU" that the Nigerian educational sector is grossly under funded and there is an urgent need for the resurrection of the Nigerian Educational sector.

The President further said "At the expiration of our 7 days ultimatum, the NANS may be forced to embark on a national protest to the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Education and every other agencies involved. We can not in anyway wait longer to see the future of the Nigerian youths being mortgaged due to inefficiency of the people who have been saddled with responsibilities."

"We call on the President Umaru Musa Yar'adua and Minister of Education, Dr. Aja Nwachukwu who were themselves, teachers to consider this position as an humble appeal as we shall not hesitate to embark on all legitimate means in ensuring that the funding of the educational sector is made a priority of the Government," the statement noted.
