On the occasion of World Teachers Day, participants of a ceremony stressed the need for devising a national policy to increase the literacy rate and improve the standard of education.
The function was arranged by Aman Welfare Society, according to a news release issued here.
Haji Muhammad Gulzar Awan, Central Chairman Pakistan Aman Party, while addressing the participants said that education plays a pivotal role in the progress and prosperity of nations, adding that developed countries that realise the importance of education are ruling the world.
He said that teachers are the real nation builders and must be provided with rights, as they impart education to our generations. He was of the view that the same respect and dignity that the teachers in developed countries are enjoying must be given to the teachers' community in our society.
Haji Awan said that teachers must be given a respectable position and the basic facility of education must be provided equally to the people living in urban areas of the country as well.
World Teachers Day underlines the importance of the 1966 ILO/Unesco Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. Another Unesco recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997. Both recommendations lay down the guidelines on issues such as training and employment conditions for teachers, participation of teachers and their representatives in educational decisions, and measures that should be taken in each country to promote the quality of teachers and learning environments.
